General Grievous's Timeline

Key Events in General Grievous's Star Wars Story

Back to All Characters

General Grievous (Qymaen jai Sheelal) died in 19 BBY.

Grievous, born Qymaen jai Sheelal, was a Kaleesh male warlord from the Wild Space world of Kalee who became the cyborg Supreme Commander of the Droid Army of the Confederacy of Independent Systems during the Clone Wars. A brutal and calculating field commander rather than a Force-sensitive, he was rebuilt into a towering armored cyborg housing little more than his organic brain, eyes and internal organs, and he was trained in lightsaber combat by Count Dooku so that he could hunt Jedi — a pursuit that made him infamous for the collection of lightsabers taken from his kills. Serving directly beneath Dooku and, unknowingly, the Sith Lord Darth Sidious, Grievous led Separatist campaigns across the galaxy from his flagship, including the Malevolence offensive, the capture of Jedi Master Eeth Koth, an attempted invasion of Kamino, and the raid on the Jedi Temple's holocron vault by way of his forces. His greatest strike came in 19 BBY when he led the Separatist attack on Coruscant and abducted Supreme Chancellor Palpatine, only to lose his fleet's flagship and flee to Utapau, where he was cornered and killed by Jedi General Obi-Wan Kenobi — a death that, with Dooku's, effectively decapitated the Separatist war effort on the eve of the Empire.

Unknown date - Birth on Kalee

Qymaen jai Sheelal is born a Kaleesh male on the Wild Space world of Kalee. Canon sources do not establish a year.

Before 22 BBY - Rebuilt as a cyborg

Sheelal's body is destroyed and he is reconstructed as a heavily armored cyborg, retaining only his brain, eyes and some organs. Taking the name Grievous, he enters the service of the Confederacy of Independent Systems.

Before 22 BBY - Trained by Count Dooku

Count Dooku personally instructs Grievous in lightsaber combat, teaching the non-Force-sensitive general to fight and kill Jedi. Grievous begins collecting the lightsabers of his victims as trophies.

22 BBY - Supreme Commander of the Droid Army

With the outbreak of the Clone Wars, Grievous commands the Separatist droid armies in the field, becoming one of the most feared figures of the war.

~22 BBY - The Malevolence campaign

Grievous commands the ion-cannon warship Malevolence in a terror campaign against Republic fleets and medical stations before Jedi forces cripple and destroy it.

~22 BBY - Battle of Bothawui

Grievous's armored column is ambushed and defeated by Anakin Skywalker and Ahsoka Tano, forcing the general to abandon the field.

~21 BBY - Capture of Eeth Koth

Grievous overwhelms and captures Jedi Master Eeth Koth, broadcasting the humiliation across the galaxy; a Jedi strike team led by Obi-Wan Kenobi rescues Koth, but Grievous escapes.

~21 BBY - Invasion of Kamino

Alongside Asajj Ventress, Grievous leads a Separatist assault on the cloning facilities of Kamino, which is repelled by Republic and clone defenders.

~20 BBY - Defeat on Florrum

Grievous is captured by pirates and Jedi younglings on Florrum and later traded back to the Separatists in a prisoner exchange.

19 BBY - Battle of Coruscant

Grievous leads the surprise Separatist attack on the Republic capital and abducts Supreme Chancellor Palpatine, holding him aboard the flagship Invisible Hand.

19 BBY - Escape from the Invisible Hand

After Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi board his flagship and Dooku is killed, Grievous flees the crippled cruiser in an escape pod and retreats to Utapau, becoming leader of the Separatist Council in Dooku's absence.

19 BBY - Death at the Battle of Utapau

Tracked to Utapau, Grievous duels Obi-Wan Kenobi and is killed when Kenobi shoots him in his exposed organic sac, igniting him from within. His death precedes the execution of Order 66 and the collapse of the Confederacy.
