Maul, originally styled Darth Maul, was a Force-sensitive Dathomirian Zabrak male who rose from a Nightbrother of Dathomir to become the secret Sith apprentice of Darth Sidious. Trained from childhood in the dark side and an unmatched practitioner of Juyo lightsaber combat wielding a double-bladed saber, he was unleashed on Naboo, where he killed Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn before being bisected by Obi-Wan Kenobi and left for dead. He survived in madness for years until his brother Savage Opress recovered him and Mother Talzin restored his mind and gave him cybernetic legs. Consumed by vengeance against Kenobi and the Jedi, he built the Shadow Collective and seized control of Mandalore, only to be defeated and cast aside by Sidious. In the years after the Clone Wars he operated as a crime lord, leading the Crimson Dawn syndicate and later scheming as a shadowy warlord. His decades-long obsession ended on Tatooine, where he was slain in a final duel with Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Sent by Sidious during the Naboo crisis, Maul kills Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn but is bisected by Obi-Wan Kenobi and falls down a reactor shaft, presumed dead.
