Maz Kanata is a diminutive, orange-skinned Force-sensitive alien of an undefined species and one of the galaxy's oldest known individuals, born roughly a thousand years before the war between the First Order and the Resistance. For much of her extraordinarily long life she ran a castle on the forest world of Takodana, earning a reputation as a "pirate queen" by offering safe harbor to smugglers, travelers, and rogues of all allegiances — provided they respected her house rules forbidding politics and war under her roof. A collector of antiques and relics, she came to possess the lightsaber built by Anakin Skywalker and later wielded by Luke Skywalker, which she offered to Rey in 34 ABY as the young scavenger's destiny began to unfold. After the First Order destroyed her castle, Maz allied herself with the Resistance, lending her wisdom and combat experience through the final campaign against the Sith Eternal, and she survived the war.

Over roughly a millennium, Maz establishes and maintains her castle on Takodana, welcoming smugglers and travelers while enforcing strict prohibitions against politics and war, and amassing a vast collection of relics and antiques.

~19 BBY–34 ABY - Keeper of the Skywalker Lightsaber

At some point Maz comes into possession of the lightsaber Anakin Skywalker built during the Clone Wars and later passed to his son Luke. She keeps it stored in her castle's vaults, deflecting questions about how she acquired it.

34 ABY - Han Solo, Rey and Finn Visit Takodana

Maz receives Han Solo, Rey, Finn, and BB-8. Sensing Rey's potential, she offers her the Skywalker lightsaber, urging her to embrace the call of the Force.

34 ABY - Destruction of Maz's Castle

The First Order attacks Takodana in pursuit of BB-8 and the map to Luke Skywalker, destroying Maz's ancient castle. Maz survives and afterward aligns herself with the Resistance.

35 ABY - Aiding the Resistance Against the Final Order

Maz supports the Resistance from its base on Ajan Kloss during the campaign against Emperor Palpatine's returned Sith forces, and is present among the survivors celebrating the victory at the Battle of Exegol.
