Qui-Gon Jinn's Timeline
Key Events in Qui-Gon Jinn's Star Wars Story
Qui-Gon Jinn was born in 80 BBY and died in 32 BBY.
Qui-Gon Jinn was a Force-sensitive human male Jedi Master who lived during the final decades of the Galactic Republic. Trained by Count Dooku and later mentor to Obi-Wan Kenobi, he was respected within the Jedi Order for his wisdom and skill, yet his maverick adherence to the philosophy of the Living Force — following the will of the Force even when it conflicted with the High Council — kept him at odds with the Jedi Council, whose offered seat he never took up on the Council's terms. During the Naboo crisis of 32 BBY he discovered the young slave Anakin Skywalker on Tatooine and became convinced the boy was the prophesied Chosen One destined to bring balance to the Force. Qui-Gon was struck down by the Sith Lord Darth Maul during the Battle of Naboo; with his dying breath he charged Obi-Wan with training Anakin. He later became one of the first Jedi to learn to retain his consciousness after death, returning as a guiding voice through the Force.
~80 BBY - Birth
Qui-Gon Jinn is born to a family on a terrestrial world that remains unidentified in canon, leaving the planet as an infant to be raised within the Jedi Order.
~72 BBY - Training in the Jedi Order
Identified as strongly Force-sensitive, Qui-Gon is trained at the Jedi Temple on Coruscant and eventually taken as the Padawan of Jedi Master Count Dooku.
~44 BBY - Master and Apprentice
Now a Jedi Master, Qui-Gon takes the young Obi-Wan Kenobi as his Padawan learner. Around this period he undertakes the fateful mission to Pijal recounted in the novel Master & Apprentice, and is offered but declines a seat on the Jedi High Council.
32 BBY - The Naboo Blockade
Sent with Obi-Wan by Chancellor Valorum to negotiate with the Trade Federation over its blockade of Naboo, Qui-Gon escapes an assassination attempt and reaches the surface, rescuing Queen Amidala and the Gungan Jar Jar Binks.
32 BBY - Discovery of Anakin Skywalker
Stranded on Tatooine, Qui-Gon meets the slave boy Anakin Skywalker, senses his extraordinary connection to the Force, and wins his freedom through a podrace, believing him to be the Chosen One.
32 BBY - Duel on Naboo and Death
During the liberation of Naboo, Qui-Gon duels the Sith Lord Darth Maul in the Theed generator complex and is mortally wounded. As he dies, he asks Obi-Wan to train Anakin as a Jedi.
~19 BBY and beyond - Voice in the Force
Having learned to preserve his identity after death, Qui-Gon's spirit later guides Obi-Wan Kenobi and Yoda, and speaks to Obi-Wan during his years of exile.
