Jabba Desilijic Tiure, better known as Jabba the Hutt, was a Hutt gangster and crime lord who ran a vast criminal empire from his palace on the Outer Rim desert world of Tatooine. A member of the powerful Grand Hutt Council and the Desilijic clan, Jabba controlled much of the galaxy's piracy, slaving, spice-running, and smuggling operations, employing bounty hunters and enforcers to protect his interests. He is remembered for sponsoring the Boonta Eve podrace, for his dealings with smugglers such as Han Solo during the Galactic Civil War, and for holding both Han Solo (frozen in carbonite) and Princess Leia Organa captive. He met his end during the rescue of Han Solo, when Leia strangled him with the very chain he had used to enslave her aboard his sail barge over the Great Pit of Carkoon.
