Yoda's Timeline

Key Events in Yoda's Star Wars Story

Back to All Characters

Yoda was born in 896 BBY and died in 4 ABY.

Yoda was a diminutive, green-skinned member of an unnamed and mysterious species who became the most revered Jedi of the modern age, serving as Grand Master of the Jedi Order and as a member of the Jedi High Council for centuries. Born around 896 BBY, he began instructing younglings roughly a century later and trained generations of Jedi over some 800 years, including Count Dooku and, indirectly, nearly every Jedi of the late Republic. Renowned less for his lightsaber prowess — though he was among the greatest duelists alive — than for his wisdom, humility and profound connection to the living Force, he guided the Order through the Naboo crisis, reluctantly led the Grand Army of the Republic as a general during the Clone Wars, and was ultimately deceived along with the rest of the Council by Darth Sidious. After Order 66 he dueled the newly declared Emperor in the Senate chamber, failed to defeat him, and accepted exile in the swamps of Dagobah, where he spent two decades learning from Qui-Gon Jinn's spirit how to retain his identity after death. In 3 ABY he trained Luke Skywalker in the ways of the Force, and in 4 ABY, at the age of 900, he died and became one with the Force — returning years later as a Force spirit to counsel Luke a final time on Ahch-To.

32 BBY - The Phantom Menace

Yoda tests the young Anakin Skywalker and senses grave danger in the boy's fear; after Qui-Gon Jinn's death he reluctantly permits Obi-Wan Kenobi to train Anakin and recognizes that a Sith Lord has returned.

22 BBY - Attack of the Clones and the outbreak of war

Yoda leads the clone army to Geonosis to rescue the Jedi strike team, rescues Anakin and Obi-Wan from Dooku, and duels his former apprentice — the first battle of the Clone Wars.

22–19 BBY - The Clone Wars

Serving as a general of the Republic, Yoda leads campaigns such as the defense of Rugosa, survives an assassination attempt on Vjun, defends the Jedi Temple against Cad Bane's schemes, and grows increasingly troubled by the Order's role in the war.

~19 BBY - Journey to the living Force

Guided by the voice of Qui-Gon Jinn, Yoda undertakes a pilgrimage to the priestesses of Serenno's ancient world and to Moraband, confronting Darth Bane's shade and learning that he can retain his consciousness after death.

19 BBY - Order 66 and the duel with Sidious

Yoda survives the clone betrayal on Kashyyyk with the aid of Chewbacca and Tarfful, returns to Coruscant, and duels Darth Sidious in the Senate chamber. Unable to defeat the new Emperor, he withdraws.

19 BBY - Exile on Dagobah

Accepting that the Jedi have failed, Yoda goes into hiding in the swamps of Dagobah, continuing his studies with Qui-Gon's spirit and awaiting a new hope.

~2 BBY - Guiding Ezra Bridger

Through the Force, Yoda speaks to Ezra Bridger in the Jedi Temple on Lothal and later at the Temple's Force nexus, warning him of the perils of vengeance and pointing him toward Malachor.

3 ABY - Training Luke Skywalker

Luke Skywalker arrives on Dagobah at Obi-Wan's urging. Yoda tests him, reluctantly accepts him as a student, raises his X-wing from the bog, and warns him against leaving to confront Vader on Bespin.

4 ABY - Death and becoming one with the Force

At 900 years old, Yoda tells a returned Luke that Vader is his father and that another Skywalker remains, then dies and vanishes into the Force.

34 ABY - Return as a Force spirit

On Ahch-To, Yoda appears to a despairing Luke, calls down lightning on the ancient Jedi tree, and reminds him that failure is the greatest teacher — prompting Luke's final stand.
